about

PAY ATTENTION.

YOU MAY BE TESTED ON WHAT YOU REMEMBER.

(i) The TV channel ident buzzes and crackles across the cathode ray screen. A short burst of faded, reprocessed primary colours, shivering on black. Geometric shapes. Typography. The letters I, T, A. A tinny jingle.

(ii) The endless concrete sprawl of the city groans under the weight of years of apathetic neglect. At the centre of it all, three monolithic towers claw their way up into the dull, disinterested sky.

(iii) The room is small, cramped and dreary. A heavy film of cigarette smoke hangs in the air as many fingers clatter away at typewriter keys and a large clock on the wall ticks loudly. The time is 11:59. At the far end of the room sits a drab, middle aged man, his overweight frame housed in a shabby and ill-fitting brown suit, his thinning hair swept unconvincingly over his head and tucked behind large black spectacles. Blood runs from his nose, down across his lips and drips on to the work spread chaotically across his desk.

This is Elliot. Elliot is Here.

DO NOT LOOK AT THE FLASH.

(iv) A succession of bleak vistas. A feral landscape, made militant by decades of abuse. A dull electric groan permeates the air with no visible source. Bizarre, half-collapsed structures pock-mark the earth, a derelict railroad track cuts across the terrain like a crude scar and the rotting hull of a long-deceased boat sits atop a mound of sodden dirt. There is no wind - an unnatural stillness hangs in the air. The day is waning.

(v) Two men dressed in smart, matching beige suits and turtleneck sweaters lie motionless atop a rough hewn hill. They could be identical, but the face of the man lying to the west is obscured behind an old gas mask. His head is twisted to one side, the up-turned eyepiece cracked and bloody. Across from the two men a briefcase rests in the long grass next to a damaged polaroid photograph.

(vi) The maskless man lurches upright, twisting violently, wild and desperate for air. He rolls on to his hands and knees and vomits a thin grey fluid on to the grass. Steadily, he calms himself. He squints as his bloodshot eyes try to take in his surroundings. There is nothing but polluted wilderness as far as the eye can see.

This is Peter. Peter is here.

THREE FACTORS DETERMINE THE SEVERITY.

(vii) The bedroom is small, dreary and cheaply furnished. On the wall opposite the bed there is small vertical tear in the faded wallpaper. Raw concrete is visible through the tear. Deep within it, grey blood pulses around a chaotic network of veins, emitting a dull, discordant electronic howl.

(viii) A cold, sharp morning on the estate. The sound of shrieking children echoes around the hard surfaces of the playground. Two sour-faced women talk quietly in hostile conspiracy as a dark-haired pregnant girl, barely out of her teens, walks past, struggling with her heavy groceries.

(ix) The hospital ward exudes a dull, sanitised despair. The pregnant girl sits upright on a hospital bed, her legs hanging off to the side. There are two thin tubes attached to her nose and a larger one is fixed up her gown, between her legs. A pump next to the bed wheezes and slurps. Around her several men in white coats are engaged in an inaudible conversation. The girl stares blankly forward, broken and empty.

This is Mary. Mary is here.

about

Dread Phallinoid England, UK

In the darkest, bleakest recesses of the ancient universe, lurks the Dread Phallinoid. Relentlessly, it strives to sate its endless hunger for retro synthesiser music, imaginary soundtracks and tales of the futuristic and the arcane. Devouring the detritus of pop culture past it spews out strange rhythms, inhuman sounds and cascading waves of deviant music. Nothing can stop the Dread Phallinoid. ... more
